Sohmer began his writing career as a Shakespearean scholar and as a fiction and nonfiction author. Robert Gottlieb of Simon & Schuster published Sohmer’s first novel, The Way It Was, in 1996. In cooperation with The Minneapolis Star and Tribune Company, the former creative director of the American Newspaper Publishers Association’s Bureau of Advertising founded his own media promotion agency. The New York-based agency then developed PowerPoint and firm sales presentations for media clients over the next five years.

Sohmer previously worked for NBC as an Executive Vice President and as President and Chief Operating Officer of Columbia Pictures. From 1982 to 1985, he was in charge of NBC’s primetime specials, daytime shows, children’s programming, and The Tonight Show. In addition, 15 of the top 30 primetime specials were produced by NBC.
