Avis C. Robinson was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 26, 1953, as Avis Edna Collins. Edward Collins is her father’s name, and Annie Collins is her mother’s name. Her parents have four children, and she is the third among them. Her ancestors are of black, white, and Nottoway Indian descent.
Robinson was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, where her mother, a cancer researcher, got a position at the National Institutes of Health when she was four years old. In Maryland, she went to Colesville Elementary School, White Oak Jr. High School, and the Academy of Holy Cross.
1971, Alvis enrolled at the University of Maryland to study economics and urban studies. In addition, she studied dance and the visual arts. She relocated to San Francisco and enrolled at Golden Gate University after finishing her undergraduate degree in three years. She received her Master’s degree in Economics and Finance from Golden Gate University and then went on to Harvard University.
Career
Avis C. Robinson began painting in high school and began quilting in her early twenties. Her career as an artist, however, did not begin until the 2000s. She joined the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as deputy director of the Office of Atmospheric Programs after finishing her studies in the late 1970s.
Robinson worked with the Environmental Protection Agency for many years before moving into philanthropy. She established the Washington Metropolitan Scholars Program in order to assist more African-American students in gaining admission to prestigious colleges and universities.
When Avis’ mixed-media image of Abraham Lincoln was chosen to be permanently exhibited in the freshly refurbished entry lobby of Ford’s Theatre in Washington, her career as a professional artist began. Many of her paintings and fabric works have since been erected in a variety of locations, including the lobby of the United States Mission to the United Nations in New York.
