Following his college football career, Smith was selected first overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 1985 NFL Draft.
He steadily improved his game and quickly established himself as a sack specialist, tallying 15 in 1986 and a personal high of 19, just three shy of the then-NFL record of 22 in 1990.
By 1989, Smith had already become the Bills’ all-time sack leader, with his 52nd sack setting a team record that he would break 119 times over the course of his career.
Smith’s defensive performance helped the Buffalo Bills reach Super Bowl XXV in 1990, but they were defeated by the New York Giants. Smith’s stats remained impressive in 1996, with 90 tackles and 14 sacks.
Similarly, in 1997, he had 65 tackles and 14 sacks, and in 1998, despite his age, he had a respectable 50 tackles and ten sacks.
Smith signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins and had 58 tackles and ten sacks in his first season. He finished his career as the only player in NFL history to have 200 career sacks.
