Matt Thomas was born on August 4, 1994, to Greg and Martha Thomas in Decatur, Illinois, United States. He also has a big brother, Tony, and a sister named Josie Thomas.
Greg, his father, died by suicide when he was nine years old. He never paid attention to grooming his three small children because he was a persistent alcoholic and drug user.

Thomas attended Iowa State University in Ames after graduating from high school and played basketball for the Iowa State Cyclones.
He was entrusted to start nearly half of the matches that season because he had just joined the squad as one of the greatest high school prospects. However, he had a poor season, averaging only 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
