Lawrence Washington’s tenure as adjutant general of the Virginia militia led him, his half-brother, to pursue a commission. Dinwiddie appointed Washington as a special envoy in October 1753. In November 1753, Washington’s group arrived at the Ohio River and was met by a French patrol.
Dinwiddie promoted George Washington to lieutenant colonel and second-in-command of the 300-man Virginia Regiment in February 1754, with orders to engage French forces at the Forks of the Ohio.
Because the French detachment was only about fifty men strong, George Washington advanced on May 28 with a small force of Virginians and Indian allies to ambush them. He was volunteered to assist General Edward Braddock, who led a British effort to drive the French from Fort Duquesne and the Ohio Country in 1755.
