Dwyer was selected by Sporting Kansas City as the 16th overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. He made his professional debut against FC Dallas on March 25 as an unused substitute. After the MLS 2012 season, Dwyer made an attempt to join St Mirren of the Scottish Premier League. Dwyer’s loan was ended by Sporting on January 3, 2013. For the 2013 campaign, Dwyer and three other teammates were loaned to USL Pro team Orlando City. In the first three games for the Lions, he assisted once and scored twice. On May 4, 2013, Dwyer earned his maiden hat-trick against Antigua Barracuda. With 13 goals versus Wilmington three weeks later, he tied the USL Pro’s all-time season goal record.

Dwyer outperformed Jhonny Arteaga, who has 13 goals for FC New York in 2011, with 14 goals. On June 22, 2013, Dwyer scored the opening goal in a 3-4 loss to Fluminense of Brazil’s Série A. On June 27, following Orlando City SC’s US Open Cup loss to Chicago Fire SC, Sporting KC called back Dwyer. He scored his first MLS goal on August 3 in injury time of a 2-3 defeat to the New York Red Bulls. Five days later, Dwyer made his CONCACAF Champions League debut.
