Playing Career

On June 30, 1993, the “Houston Rockets” picked Cassell with the 24th overall choice in the first round of the “NBA” draft. When he got there, he had to hustle and fight hard to win playing time on a team that had won 55 games the year before and had a crowded backcourt as well as future Hall of Famers like Hakeem Olajuwon. In the 1994 NBA Finals, he scored 7 points in the final 32 seconds of the Rockets’ 93-89 triumph over the ‘New York Knicks,’ helping the team win 58 games and place second in the Western Conference. He was able to carve out a backup role for himself with the Rockets.

In his second season with the “Rockets,” Cassell assumed a bigger role, playing in all 82 games and assisting the team in making the “NBA” championships for the second consecutive season. In addition, the Rockets traded Cassell to the Phoenix Suns on August 19, 1996. By averaging 14.8 points per game under new coach Danny Ainge, he contributed to the team’s improvement.
