Breast cancer was discovered in Kelly’s wife, who was 37 years old at the time of her diagnosis in May 2003.  Career in Coaching

After receiving his degree, Brian Kelly went on to hold the positions of linebackers coach, defensive coordinator, and softball coach until the year 1986. In 1987, he became a member of the Grand Valley State University coaching staff, where he worked as a graduate assistant and was in charge of the defensive backs. In 1989, he was given the roles of defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator, and in 1991, he was promoted to the position of head coach.

During the 13 years that Kelly was the head coach of the Grand Valley State Lakers, the program achieved a record of five conference championships and six appearances in the Division II Playoff. During his 13 years at Grand Valley State, he compiled a record of 118-35-2.

Kelly made the announcement in the wake of Mike DeBord’s departure from Central Michigan University at the end of the 2003 season. Kelly is Central Michigan University’s 24th head coach.

He finished his three seasons at Central Michigan with a record of 19–16 overall. He was given the position of head coach of Cincinnati on December 3rd, 2006. Kelly finished his time at Cincinnati with a record of 34–6 during his tenure there.

Also Kelly was hired by Notre Dame in December 2009 to take over as the school’s head coach, succeeding Charlie Weis in that role. In the year 2021, he enrolled at LSU.
