When he was ten years old, his group’s guardian was unable to attend a game, so he was forced to start in goal. Steffen spent his freshman and sophomore years at Malvern Preparatory School before transferring to Downingtown West High School, where he participated in both the Whippets’ and DELCO’s programs.

He was voted as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the College Cup and was included on the All-Tournament Team. Steffen maintained his position when Maryland progressed to the Big Ten Conference in 2014, playing every minute of the Terrapins’ 22 games in goal.
