However, Arsenal’s poor form meant that they would never win a trophy; their best finish was third in the league in 1958-59. Despite being Arsenal’s top scorer in 1960-61, Herd was dissatisfied with the club’s lack of success and left in July 1961 for Manchester United for £35,000.

In total, he scored 107 goals in 180 appearances for Arsenal, ranking him 15th all-time. He made his United debut against West Ham United on August 19, 1961. Herd scored two goals in the final against Leicester City to help the club win the FA Cup in 1962-63.

He also helped them win the English league championship in 1965 and 1967. In July 1968, he left Manchester United for Stoke City on a free transfer. In 1968-69, he played 39 games for Stoke, scoring nine goals as the club narrowly avoided relegation.

Herd appeared in nine games in 1969-70, scoring twice before being released at the end of the season. In December 1970, Herd signed with Shay Brennan at Waterford. He made his League of Ireland debut on December 14 at Kilcohan Park.
