Henry Morton Stanley, played by Ed Kemmer, is an investigative reporter who evaluates Hancock’s success in avoiding war on the frontier. Charles Carlson, who had a brief acting career from 1960 to 1967, played Wild Bill Hickok.
Phillips also played Chief Franks in Steve McQueen’s 1966 anti-war drama The Sand Pebbles, a minor but significant role. He worked in television until his death in 1982. On television, he was mostly a guest star or featured player, but he did have a few recurring character roles, including series regular “Doc” Kaiser in Twelve O’Clock High (1964-1967) and a regular on The Betty White Show (1977–1978).
