Terry Hall, lead vocalist of Ska band The Specials, has died on Dec. 20, 2022
The Specials’ lead vocalist Terry Hall passed away at the age of 63 on December 20, 2022. In a message posted on social media on Monday, the band informed fans that the musician had passed away following a “short illness,” but no other information was provided.
The statement stated, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced”
The note read, “Terry was a great husband and parent and one of the kindest, funniest, and most honest of souls. The joy, the pain, the humor, the struggle for justice, but most of all the love, were all captured in his music and performances.
Hall was a former member of both the Colourfield and the Fun Boy Three in addition to his involvement with the band whose cover of “A Message to You Rudy” became popular. Together with Neville Staple of the Specials, he founded Fun Boy Three. He co-wrote a popular song with Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos.
Gutted to hear of the passing of #terryhall. He was a lovely, sensitive, talented and unique person. Our extremely brief romance resulted in the song Our Lips Are Sealed, which will forever tie us together in music history. Terrible news to hear this. ? pic.twitter.com/Fxxqr0p01T

“I was saddened to learn of Terry Hall’s demise. He was a charming, compassionate, gifted, and special individual. Our Lips Are Sealed, the song that united us in music history during our incredibly brief romance, was the outcome, Wiedlin tweeted. It is terrible to hear this news.
Tracks like “Too Much Too Young,” “Ghost Town,” and “Gangsters” are among the Specials’ best-known songs. Hall made multiple comebacks for the group, and in 2008 he did so.
The Specials requested respect for Hall’s family’s privacy in a tweet that read: “He leaves behind the gift of his extraordinary music and tremendous humanity.” Hall will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Terry frequently ended the Specials’ life-affirming performances with the three words “Love Love Love,” the band continued.
In 1977, Hall started the ska band, and he sang lead until 1981. He then came back for a reunion up till his passing in 2008.
When the group’s album Encore was published in 2019, Will Hermes of Rolling Stone referred to them as “legends.” The third album by The Special, released 38 years after the prior one, More Specials, is “perfectly timed,” according to the critic. The band, in the words of frontman Terry Hall, are still “horribly relevant.”
