Hagler won the middleweight title after seven years and 50 fights. He demonstrated that he was a busy world champion. He also defeated former world champion Antuofermo in a rematch by TKO in four rounds after knocking out future world champion Fulgencio Obelmejias of Venezuela in eight rounds.
