Following the discovery of a pistol in his luggage last month, NASCAR driver Kyle Busch has publicly addressed his detention at a Mexican airport.
“I have a valid concealed carry permit from my local authority and adhere to all handgun law(s), but I made a mistake by forgetting it was in my bag,” Kyle Busch, a driver for Richard Childress Racing, said via Twitter Monday.
The Public Ministry of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) in Quintana Roo reports that “Kyle Thomas B.” was detained on January 27 after airport security employees found a gun with a.380 caliber and a magazine loaded with six hollow point rounds in his suitcase.
Busch claimed that while the matter was being handled, he was held at the airport while on vacation with his wife in Mexico.

“I was not aware of Mexican law and had no intention of bringing a handgun into Mexico,” Busch said in a tweeted statement.
Busch received a 3.5-year prison term and a $1,085 fine, according to a press release from the FGR. Busch was granted permission to enter the country again, but it is unknown how or whether he will carry out his term.
“I apologize for my mistake and appreciate the respect shown by all parties as we resolved the matter. My family and I consider this issue closed,” said Busch.
Busch finished third in the Busch Light Clash on February 5 at the Coliseum, and on February 19 he is anticipated to compete in the Daytona 500.
