The DC Metropolitan Police Department announced in a news release that police have detained and charged a man in relation to the assault on Rep. Angie Craig, who was attacked in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington, DC, on Thursday morning.

The police reported that 26-year-old Kendrick Hamlin, also known as Hamlin Khalil Hamlin, was arrested and charged with simple assault. According to source, Kendrick was charged to assault case for Angie Craig.

It wasn’t immediately known if Hamlin is being defended by a lawyer.

According to authorities, the incident happened at 7:10 in the morning, and “after the victim defended themself, the suspect fled the area.”

A police report states that Craig informed officers that her attacker followed her into the elevator, punched her “with a closed hand,” and then grabbed her neck. According to the story, she “tossed her hot coffee” at him as self-defense.

In a statement earlier on Thursday, Rep. Craig’s director of staff, Nick Coe, claimed that the Minnesota congresswoman “defended herself from the attacker and incurred bruises, but is otherwise physically alright.”

He said that there was “no proof” that the crime was politically motivated and that the attacker fled the scene.

The representative dialed 911, and according to Coe’s statement, she “is appreciative to the DC Metropolitan Police Department for their rapid response.”

The lawmaker “asks for privacy at this time,” it continued.

According to Craig’s office, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with him earlier this afternoon.

According to a source with knowledge of the call, “the vice president called to check in on Rep. Craig and wish her well.” Given the trauma, Harris advised Craig to “do what’s necessary to take care of herself.”

Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the House Democrats, denounced the assault and said in a statement that “the House Democratic Caucus family” was shocked by what transpired. The fact that she is safe and healing is greatly appreciated, but we are all horrified that this horrible assault occurred.

At order to “guarantee that Angie and her family are safe while in our nation’s capitol. And at home in Minnesota,” Jeffries said he has urged the House sergeant at arms and the US Capitol Police to cooperate.

In light of recent occurrences like the high-profile attack on former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. As well as the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, there is increased concern about the safety of lawmakers and their families at this time.

After defeating Republican Representative Jason Lewis. Craig was chosen to serve in the House of Representatives in 2018.

The lawmaker is the co-chairwoman of the Congressional Equality Caucus for the 118th Congress.
