College Career

McConnell received the 2011 Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year award following his first season at Duquesne in 2010–2011, making 32 appearances (30 starts) and averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 2.8 steals per game.

As a sophomore in 2011–2012, he had a per-game average of 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.8 steals. Due to NCAA transfer regulations, he was forced to sit out the 2012–13 season after transferring to Arizona in April 2012. He was selected for the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team and the first team of the conference as a senior, and he assisted Arizona in reaching the Elite Eight once more.

Philadelphia 76ers (2015–2019)

After going undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft, McConnell then signed on with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2015 NBA Summer League. He joined the 76ers on September 27, 2015. He garnered two votes in the 2016 NBA All-Rookie Team voting at the end of the season. In July 2016, he re-joined the 76ers in time for the NBA Summer League. On December 11, 2016, he nearly had a triple-double against the Detroit Pistons, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists. On January 6, 2017, in a 110-106 loss to the Boston Celtics, he had a career-high 17 assists. Also, on January 11, 2017, he then made a turnaround jump shot from the baseline to beat the New York Knicks for the win.

On November 25, 2017, he defeated the Orlando Magic by a score of 130-111 while dishing out 13 assists. On January 15, 2018, he outperformed his previous high of 18 points in a 117-111 victory over the Toronto Raptors. In a 108-92 victory over the Knicks on February 12th, 2018, he notched his first triple-double of his professional career with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. The Philadelphia 76ers announced on June 13th, 2018, that they have exercised McConnell’s fourth-year option under their contract.

Indiana Pacers (2019–present)

On July 3, 2019, McConnell agreed to a $7 million, two-year contract with the Indiana Pacers. Together with colleagues T. J. Warren and T. J. Leaf, he was one of three athletes on the roster with the first name T.J.
