Elections to the United States House of Representatives in 2020

Moore launched his candidacy for Utah’s 1st Congressional District in February 2020. Moore and Weber County Commissioner Kerry Gibson finished second in a field of 12 primary candidates at the Republican National Convention. Bob Stevenson, a Davis County commissioner, and Katie Witt, the mayor of Kaysville, were two other candidates who collected enough signatures to enter the primary.

Moore was chastised throughout the party’s nomination process for not living in the allocated congressional district. He lived on Salt Lake City’s east bench, 15 miles outside the district. Candidates for Congress are simply have to live in the same state as the district they would represent. Moore then won the Republican primary with slightly more than 30% of the vote on June 30.

Furthermore, Moore defeated Democratic nominee Darren Parry in the general election with 69.5% of the vote to Parry’s 30.4%. He was inaugurated on January 3, 2021, retaining Republican control of the seat since 1980 and marking the first time a holder has not run in 18 years. Despite being voted to one of the world’s most powerful legislative bodies, Moore has remarked that his favorite title is “Little League coach.”

Moore’s main opponents were Andrew Badger and Tina Cannon. State Senate President Stuart Adams backed Moore in an editorial published in the Deseret News on May 15.

Tenure

Moore voted against Donald Trump’s second impeachment attempt. Moore took part in a bipartisan vote on May 19, 2021, to establish the committee that would investigate the Capitol storming on January 6, 2021.

The legislation to establish this commission was failed in the Senate. On January 13, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy argued in favor of the formation of such a committee, stating that “a fact-finding commission… would be prudent.” Moore voted against the present United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.

Moore was one of only a few House Republicans who voted to keep Liz Cheney as conference chair both times. He told the Deseret News editorial board that the Republican leadership had not put any pressure on him to vote one way or the other, and that it was critical for them to have “broad appeal.”

But he failed to timely disclose stock trades, according to the STOCK Act. The overall value of the equities in question is unknown, although it ranges between $78,000 to $1.1 million. Moore has acknowledged to paying a “late filing fee” to the House Committee on Ethics in July 2021, which generally starts at $200. Moore voted against the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
