Bill Self began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas in 1985, where he stayed until 1986.
He then became an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University, where he stayed from 1986 through 1993. Furthermore, his first head coaching role was at Oral Roberts, where he was hired in 1993.
During his first year at ORU, the club only won six games. He coached this squad for four seasons.
Later, he was recruited by Tulsa, where coach played three seasons (1998-2000), compiling a Tulsa-best 74-27 record.

He was hired head coach at the University of Kansas in 2003. During his 19 seasons as head coach, he has led the Jayhawks to 16 Big 12 regular season titles, including an NCAA record 14 straight Big 12 regular season titles, some of which were shared (2005-2018).
In addition, he led the Jayhawks to NCAA championships in 2008 and 2022, as well as four appearances in the NCAA Final Four (2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022).
