Murdock graduated from LaGrange High School in 1964 and was born in the wonderful Louisianan city of Lake Charles. While attending Southwestern Assemblies of God University in 1966, he left after three semesters.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that he submitted 76 tunes to ASCAP. In 1989, Mike attracted notice by pleading with viewers to donate to Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker while acting as a pastor on The PTL Club. Bakker was jailed for fraud, but the PTL later went bankrupt.
Murdock joyfully announced the purchase of two jets during a sermon, chastised his audience for their envy, and urged them to “act happy” for him. It was brought up on Last Week Tonight as an illustration of the lavish lifestyles that many televangelists lead.
