The cause of death is not stated and remains unknown. He almost certainly died as a result of his health problems.
Gary Rossington’s Health Issues
Rossington has had a number of health challenges, including cardiac troubles. He had a successful quintuple bypass operation in 2003, which helped him to recover from his open heart surgery.
However, his cardiac problems persisted, and in October 2015, he suffered a heart attack, forcing the cancellation of two Lynyrd Skynyrd gigs. Despite these difficulties, Rossington was adamant about continuing to perform with the band.
He was able to recuperate after emergency heart surgery during the Big Wheels Keep on Turnin’ Tour in 2021. He has also had a history of heart attacks on stage during his career.
Rossington died in a plane crash in 1977. A band member was flying home from a gig in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, aboard a chartered jet. The event was held in Greenville, South Carolina. The plane crashed into the forest due to a lack of fuel.
The accident occurred three days after the release of their fifth studio album, “Street Survivors.”
Several band members died in the plane disaster, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, Steve Gaines’ sister, and a road manager.
