Kenneth Simon Dorsey (born April 22, 1981) is an American football coach and former quarterback who currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the National Football League (NFL) Buffalo Bills.

He played college football at the University of Miami, where he was a national champion and two-time Heisman Trophy finalist, and was drafted in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Dorsey was hired as the Carolina Panthers’ quarterbacks coach in 2013, after working as a pro scout for the team from 2011 to 2012.

College playing career

Dorsey, who was not highly regarded when he graduated from high school, went on to become the winningest quarterback in University of Miami history. As the team’s starting quarterback, he went 38-2, including a 34-game winning run. Dorsey also set career records for total offense (9,486 yards), passing yards (9,565), passing touchdowns (86), pass completions (668), pass attempts (1,153), victories as a starting quarterback (38), winning percentage by a starting quarterback (.974), 200-yard passing performances (31), consecutive passes without an interception (193), consecutive games with a touchdown pass (31), and touchdown passes in a game (5).

He guided the Hurricanes to back-to-back BCS National Championship game appearances, winning the Rose Bowl in 2002 and the Fiesta Bowl in 2003.

Dorsey led the Hurricanes to an undefeated 12-0 season in 2001 and was selected co-MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl (in which Miami defeated the University of Nebraska to capture the 2001 BCS National Championship). His 2001 Miami team is widely regarded as one of the best and most talented college football teams in history.

Dorsey was twice voted Offensive Player of the Year (2001, 2002) and three times named First-Team All-Big East (2000, 2001, 2002). Dorsey was also a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2001 and 2002, as well as the 2001 Maxwell Award winner for national collegiate player of the year.

San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League

Despite a great college career, Dorsey was taken by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round with the 241st overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, owing in part to concerns about Dorsey’s arm strength. He appeared in nine games (starting seven) in his first two seasons in the NFL, completing 171 of 316 pass attempts and throwing for 1,712 yards, eight touchdowns, and eleven interceptions.

He began the 2005 season as the third quarterback behind Tim Rattay and first-round choice Alex Smith, moving into the backup role after Rattay was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then he started three games in place of the injured Alex Smith. Dorsey led an incredible comeback against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11 and was a two-point conversion away from pushing the game into overtime.

Dorsey was traded to the Cleveland Browns in May 2006, along with a seventh-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, for veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer, who had recently re-signed with the 49ers. He and Derek Anderson contended for the second string position behind starter Charlie Frye during training camp.

Dorsey went on to serve as the third-string quarterback behind Anderson for the entire 2006 season after the contest finished in a virtual draw. He was chosen the starter for the week 17 game against the Houston Texans, however he was replaced by the already injured Charlie Frye just minutes before kickoff. Frye threw an interception and no touchdown passes in the Browns’ loss to the Texans.

The Browns selected Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn with the 22nd overall choice in the 2007 NFL Draft.Throughout the 2007 NFL Preseason, Frye, Anderson, Quinn, and Dorsey contended for a slot on the Browns’ quarterback depth chart. Dorsey was released by the Browns on September 1, 2007.

Following a disastrous Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh, Frye was moved to Seattle, and Dorsey was re-signed as a reserve by the Browns. Dorsey’s chances of playing time were further diminished by Derek Anderson’s breakout season in 2007.

Dorsey entered the game against the Indianapolis Colts on November 30, 2008, when Derek Anderson was injured; he completed three passes, two incomplete and one interception.

Dorsey was hired as a pro scout by the Carolina Panthers on August 15, 2011.Dorsey worked as an IMG staffer during the 2011 offseason, training NFL quarterbacks Cam Newton, Christian Ponder, and Joe Webb, as well as wide receiver Randall Cobb.[19]Dorsey joined the Panthers coaching staff on January 23, 2013, and was named quarterbacks coach under head coach Ron Rivera. Dorsey was named as the Buffalo Bills’ quarterbacks coach on February 2, 2019, by head coach Sean McDermott.
