In the process, he upset Michael Phelps, who was not at his best in the quarter-finals, to become the first Swiss swimmer to be the top seed heading into the semi-finals.
He finished sixth in the 200m Freestyle final (Phelps won by over 2-1/2 seconds over Meichtry). In addition, he was the first Swiss to break the 49-second barrier, starting the 4100 Freestyle relay in 48.96 seconds. Later in the race, he decreased his 100 Freestyle record to 48.55.
