The Early Years
Chan Sung Jung was born in Pohang, South Korea, and moved to Namyangju when he was in his mid-teens. Because of his small stature and rural origins, he was constantly bullied by his classmates, resulting in numerous fights.
When Jung’s aunt couldn’t stand seeing his plight any longer, she enrolled him in a nearby Hapkido gym. Jung also practiced kickboxing until his junior year of high school. He began training in judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and then Taekwondo after graduating from the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology. This is how he got into MMA.
A career in the UFC
On March 26, 2011, Chan made his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis, where he faced and defeated Leonard Garcia. Furthermore, he defeated Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier in his next two fights.
At UFC 163, he was defeated by José Aldo on August 3, 2013. Recovering from a loss, he made a comeback at UFC Fight Night: Bermudez vs. Korean Zombie, defeating Dennis Bermudez; however, he lost the following fight to Yair Rodrguez. He defeated Renato Moicano at UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Korean Zombie on June 22, 2019.
