Jeff attended North Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte and was named a High School Prep Football All-American as a cornerback in 1973-74. Hammond began his career as a tire changer in 1974 but later became a Jackman. He was promoted to crew chief for Darrell Waltrip at Junior Johnson Motorsports, where he won his second consecutive championship, in 1982.
