Henry Franklin Winkler was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States of America, on October 30, 1945. Winkler is of Caucasian origin and is of American nationality. Ilse Anna Marie Winkler (b.1993-d.2002) and Harry Irving Winkler are Winkler’s parents (b.1903-d.1995). On the eve of World War II, his parents moved from Berlin, Germany to the United States in 1939. His mother was a stay-at-home mom, while his father was the president of a lumber firm. His parents raised him and his sister, Beatrice Winkler, in the Conservative Jewish tradition.

Winkler was concerned as a child because of his undiagnosed dyslexia (reading impairment), which caused him to receive a bad grade in school. His father used to scold him and refer to him as a “stupid dog” because of his academic struggles. Winkler received his education at McBurney School, where he graduated in 1963. He graduated from Emerson College with a B.A. in 1963. Henry  joined the Alpha Pi Theta Fraternity throughout his collegiate years. He went on to Yale School of Drama, where he earned an M.F.A.
