Jewel Kilcher’s Personal Life: Who Is Her Boyfriend?
Jewel Kilcher, an Alaskan native, has had a long list of high-profile relationships. Her love affairs have included celebrities, athletes, and ranch tycoons (more on this below).
But for the time being, the 44-year-old is famously dating American football quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who has played for giants such as the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns. However, it wasn’t until recently that Jewel began to be open about her relationship with Whitehurst.
“We’ve been together almost a year,” the singer-songwriter said about her football player boyfriend Charli in the June 2016 issue of PEOPLE.
While they had been dating for quite some time at the time, the Never Broken Author added that they had made a point of keeping it a secret from the beginning of their relationship.
“I was very hesitant to go public,” Kilcher added. “We’re not the type to go out on a limb for a’scene.’”
Indeed, Kilcher and the Indianapolis Colts star kept their relationship private for a while before making it Instagram official in January 2016, when Jewel posted a photo of herself with Whitehurst and Terminator star Robert Patrick at the Leonard Cohen Experience.
Kilcher sprinkled a slew of imagery featuring her getaways with her athlete boyfriend, once while racing Porsches in Atlanta and again on a tropical getaway to the British Virgin Islands, after making her love life very public.
Jewel’s relationship with Whitehurst is also the first time she has made a relationship public since she and her ex-husband, Ty Murray, announced their divorce in 2014.
Jewel Kilcher’s Previous Relationships & Affairs
Jewel Kilcher was divorced from her first marriage to American nine-time World Champion rodeo cowboy, Ty Murray, long before people started seeing Foolish Games’ singer with Whitehurst.
Kilcher married Murray from 2008 to 2014 after dating for ten years.
They were also said to have dated for ten years before finally getting married on August 7, 2008. Back then, when everyone saw Jewel at her happiest with Murray, they all thought Ty was the perfect soul for the singer. Kilcher gushed about the wedding when asked about it.
“I’ve been dreaming about this day since I was a little girl on an Alaskan ranch. It was laid-back and romantic. He wore jeans and a button-down shirt, while I wore a traditional wedding gown and diamonds. Ty is unquestionably my ideal prince.”
After two years, Jewel became pregnant with Murray’s child and gave birth to a son, Kase Townes Murray, on July 1, 2011. Between her period and her due date, she confirmed her pregnancy news to PEOPLE again, saying,
“I took a pregnancy test, and it came back positive!” It was extremely difficult to keep it a secret. I was worried that if I started throwing up on set, everyone would think, ‘Oh, she’s pregnant.’
Everything seemed to be going well for Kilcher, Murray, and Townes for three years after her firstborn. However, two of the three (Jewel and her Husband) suffered a setback in their marital journey. And, as expected, they divorced each other in 2014 after 16 years of dating.
The 44-year-old singer announced her divorce on her blog, writing,
“After 16 years of marriage, my husband, friend, and partner, and I have decided to divorce. Ty and I have always tried to live the most authentic lives we could, and we wanted our divorce as husband and wife to be as loving as the way we met.”
She went on to say
“We have been engaged in a private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves for some time. Allowing ourselves the time and space to redefine who we are to one another in a loving rather than malicious manner.”
Despite this, Jewel and her ex-husband, Ty Murray, have remained amicable and are happily co-parenting their son. Kilcher also shared a joint statement from herself and her ex-husband on her post-divorce statuses on her blog.
Jewel Kilcher’s 1990s squabbles
Jewel Kilcher dated some big A-listers even back in the 1990s. Sean Penn, a two-time Academy Award winner, is one of these names. Penn, in fact, directed the first version of Jewel’s music video You Were Meant For Me.
The couple kept their distance from the public at the time and never confirmed their relationship. As a result, their dating rumor was always kept secret at first. And it wasn’t until September of 2015 that Kilcher opened up about her relationship with Penn. As the singer revealed,
“I was determined not to be ‘discovered’ because I was dating a public figure. I liked Sean and eventually fell in love with him, but I didn’t go around holding hands or trying to be noticed.”
Kilcher claims that she initially kept her relationship with Sean Penn a secret because she wanted to be famous for her music, not for her relationship with a Hollywood actor. That’s a good thing because Sean didn’t last long with Kilcher, instead of marrying another Hollywood star, Robin Wright, in 1996.
In 1994, Kilcher began dating musician Steve Poltz. He also contributed to one of Kilcher’s biggest hits, You Were Meant For Me. But the couple didn’t last long, and after two years of dating, they divorced in 1996.
Soon after, in 1997, the singer began dating Gavin Newsom, a Californian politician. However, it did not work out this time for Kilcher, and she eventually split up with Newsom in 1998, much like her previous relationship.
