Luster had departed the United States in the midst of his trial for allegedly drugging and rapping many women. Leland and Tim, his sons, assisted him in the capture. On their journey to California, Mexican authorities stopped them and arrested all four of them. After confirming Luster’s identification, Mexican officials transferred him to the United States.

Chapman and his colleagues were still being held in the Mexican jail, which had first refused to grant them bail. His wife Beth rose to her feet and alerted the media to the increasing tide of public criticism. Bail was eventually given to them. In Mexico, bounty hunting is prohibited. They got out of the country and became international bail-jumpers. On behalf of the Mexican government, US Marshals detained them in September 2006 and imprisoned them in Honolulu.
