Hopkins and his mother fought tooth and nail to get into the audition for the role of Thomas Samms, as the queue stretched three city blocks long. Hopkins and his mother were so frustrated waiting in an unusually lengthy queue that just as they were about to leave, the screenwriter’s eye was drawn to him because of his distinct appearance. Michael Schiffer walked by and pulled Hopkins to the front of the line to introduce producer and director as soon as Hopkins was captured by the scriptwriter. He was fortunate enough to be chosen for the part, and thus his career began.

His initial performance as Thomas Samms catapulted him into the spotlight almost immediately. Hopkins was also assigned to another movie, Juice, directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. Samuel L. Jackson, Queen Latifah, Dr. Dre, Omar Epps, and the late Tupac Shakur all appeared as Steel. Hopkins then went on to star in the HBO film Strapped, which was released globally. Hopkins also appeared in episodes of Murder One and Moesha over the next two years, as well as roughly six episodes of The Wayans Brothers’ series as Dupree.
