Yoshie Shiratori was initially charged with murder and robbery and sentenced to prison in Aomori. He apprehended him three days later while stealing supplies from a hospital. He received a life sentence in prison for eluding capture and stealing.

Yoshie is believed to have escaped the prison on August 26, 1944, by squeezing himself out of the small space on the metal frame. However, he was apprehended once more. The Sapporo District Court sentenced him to death. Yoshie dug his way out of prison by digging a tunnel through the floor in 1947.

• Shiratori’s life was the inspiration for Akira Yoshimura’s novel Hagoku.
• Yoshitake Shiraishi, a character in Satoru Noda’s manga Golden Kamuy, was revealed to be based on and named after Shiratori in an interview with the author.
• Due to his good behavior, he was able to spend his days in Fuchu Prison until 1961, 14 years later.
• He first worked in a tofu shop and then as a fisherman catching crabs for Russia.
• After several failed businesses, he became known for his addictive gambling and stealing.
