Dick Van Dyke began his career as a radio DJ in Danville in the 1940s, shortly after the war ended. Eric and Van-the Merry Mutes is a comedic combo he founded with Phil Erickson. They toured the West Coast in various nightclubs before settling in Atlanta in the 1950s. He subsequently began his television career on NBC in a comedy series called James’ Chance of Lifetime, where he made his first appearance in 1954.

Then he went on to appear on The Polly Bergen Show and The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom, among other shows. He made his Broadway debut in The Girls Against the Boys in 1959. In the play Bye Bye Birdie, also he portrayed the lead role. In 1961, he was recruited to star in his own sitcom, The Dick Van Dyke Show, alongside stars including Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, and Carl Reiner.
