Stoke City

After playing for Home Farm, Cherry Orchard, and Crumlin United before joining Stoke City in the summer of 2005, Adam Rooney launches his professional career. Before making his first-team debut as a second-half substitute against Tamworth in the FA Cup, he made his debut for the academy and reserves.

He made his Stoke debut against Reading on April 17, 2006, and in the season finale against an already-relegated Brighton & Hove Albion, he scored a hat-trick, becoming Stoke’s youngest-ever hat-trick scorer in just his second complete start for Stoke City. On March 16, 2007, he made a loan move to Yeovil Town, which was then extended until the end of the current campaign. He played one start and two substitute matches for Yeovil, but on May 9th, 2007, he returned to Stoke. He made a four-month loan move to League Two team Chesterfield in August 2007.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle

Inverness Adam signed a three-year contract with Caledonian Thistle, where he scored his first goal for Inverness in a 2-1 loss to St Mirren at home, the SPL’s 6000th goal. In the 2009–2010 season, he received the “Irn Bru Phenomenal” First Division Player of the Year award. With 24 goals and 27 goals overall, including the final goal against Dundee in the final game of the season, he was also the First Division’s leading scorer.

Birmingham City

Rooney played the entire 2-1 loss at Derby County on the first day of the new season after signing a two-year contract with Championship team Birmingham City. On August 21, he scored his first goal in a club match from the penalty spot to get things started against Middlesbrough; Middlesbrough fought back to win 3-1.

The next week against Watford, he scored again. He scored his first European goal when Birmingham overcame NK Maribor 1-0 in the last game of the Europa League group stage, but a stalemate between the other two teams in the group meant Birmingham failed to proceed to the last 32.

Swindon Town (loan)

Aberdeen

On January 23, 2014, Rooney signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Scottish Premiership team Aberdeen. Two days later, in a 2-2 draw with Motherwell at Fir Park, he scored on his debut. On January 23, 2014, Aberdeen defeated St. Johnstone 4-0 to advance to the 2014 Scottish League Cup Final. Also, on January 23, 2014, Rooney also crossed for Jonny Hayes’ first goal. On February 25th, he scored his fifth goal in six appearances, and on March 8th, in a 1-0 victory over Dumbarton in the Scottish Cup quarterfinals, he scored his sixth goal in eight games.

In the 2014 Scottish League Cup Final, he started for Aberdeen against his previous team Inverness, and he was chosen as the Scottish Professional Football Player of the Month for February 2014. He had a solid start to the 2014–2015 campaign, scoring twice in a home win over FK Daugava Riga in the first round of Europa League qualifying (5–200). In the second leg’s away victory, he built on his impressive start by scoring a hat-trick in the first half. In addition, he scored his first league goal of the year in a 3-0 victory over Ross County. On November 23, he maintained his strong play by converting a penalty in a 1-0 victory away at Partick Thistle to give him his 14th goal of the year. On December 22, Rooney extended his contract until the summer of 2018. He ended the season as the Scottish Premiership’s leading scorer with a total of 28 goals. On August 5, 2016, he agreed to a four-year contract extension with Aberdeen, and on March 31, 2017, during a 7-0 victory over Dundee, he registered his 100th Scottish League goal. On April 22, 2017, in the Scottish Cup semifinal between Aberdeen and Hibernian, he scored after just 12 seconds. Aberdeen won 3-2.

Salford City

On July 19, 2018, Adam signed a three-year contract with Salford City of the National League; the sum paid was not disclosed. On August 4, he played the entire first game of the 2018–19 season, which Salford drew 1–1 with Leyton Orient at home.

Solihull Moors

On March 13, 2020, Adam signed a contract to play for Solihull Moors of the National League through the 2021–2022 season. The cost wasn’t made public. Later that day, the COVID-19 outbreak caused top football in England to be suspended.
