The Buffalo Braves selected Adrian Dantley in the 1976 NBA Draft. By averaging 20.3 points per game, he established himself as a starter at small forward. In 1977, he was dealt to the Indiana Pacers. He appeared in 23 games with the Indiana Pacers during the 1977-78 season. On average, he scored 26.6 points per game. He was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers in December of the same year.
During the 1977-78 season, he appeared in 56 games for the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 19.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Injuries plagued him the next year, as he only played in 60 games. Despite appearing in every game and averaging 17.3 points, he was eventually dealt to the Utah Jazz.
He established himself as a premier scorer with the Utah Jazz. He scored 30 points between 1981 and 1984. However, he did not get along with the head coach, and as a result, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons.
