Adult Swim Cuts Ties With Justin Roiland Following Domestic Abuse Charges has severed ties with Justin Roiland following reports that the Rick and Morty co-creator was charged with felony domestic abuse in Orange County.
“Adult Swim has terminated its relationship with Justin Roiland,” said Adult Swim/Cartoon Network/Boomerang senior vp communications Marie Moore in a statement Tuesday.
Rick and Morty, the hit adult animation comedy that Roiland co-created and executive produced, and for which he voiced both the titular Rick and Morty, is distributed by Adult Swim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adult Swim isn’t even halfway through a massive 70-episode order for the show, which is one of the brand’s most popular titles and was commissioned by the channel in 2018.
According to sources, Rick and Morty will continue, with Roiland’s voice roles being recast. Though Roiland will always be credited as a co-creator, Dan Harmon, another co-creator, will now be the sole showrunner. The show has been renewed for a tenth season.

Roiland is still working on several projects with Hulu, including as a co-creator on the streaming service’s Solar Opposites, in which he voices a main character (the show was renewed for a fifth season in October). He does voice work and serves as an executive producer on the platform’s Koala Man, which premiered on January 9.
Roiland is also under contract with 20th Television Animation, which produces Solar Opposites and Koala Man. Hulu and 20th Television Animation have been contacted for comment by The Hollywood Reporter.
On Jan. 12, NBC News was the first to report that Roiland had been charged in Orange County with one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud, or deceit stemming from an alleged 2020 incident with an unnamed Jane Doe who Roiland was dating. Roiland pled not guilty and was released in 2020 on a $50,000 bond. Several pretrial hearings have already taken place, and Roiland is scheduled to appear in court on April 27.
Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, stated earlier this month that the media coverage of the case has been “inaccurate.” “To be clear, not only is Justin innocent, but we have every expectation that this matter will be dismissed once the district attorney’s office has completed its methodical review of the evidence,” Welbourn added.
