Alan Rickman’s Childhood
Alan Rickman was born on February 21, 1946, in Hammersmith, West London, England, as Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman. Bernard William Rickman was the son of Margaret Doreen Rose (née Bartlett) and Bernard William Rickman. His Catholic father worked in a factory, as a decorator and house painter, and as a former World War II aircraft fitter, while his Methodist mother was a homemaker.
He was reared with two brothers, David Rickman and Michael Rickman, and one sister, Sheila Rickman. Michael, his brother, is a District Councillor in Leicestershire. Rickman’s father died of lung cancer when he was only eight years old. His mother raised him and his three siblings primarily on her own when his father died. His mother remarried in 1960, but they separated three years later.
He went to Acton’s Derwentwater Primary School. Then he went to Latymer Upper School in London, where he participated in play. He then attended Chelsea College of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art.
