Furthermore, he was of mixed Scottish and English ancestry. When it comes to his education, Burnet attended the Leys School. He also went to Worcester College, Oxford, to study history.

Professional Life and Career

Burnet worked as a reporter for ‘The Glasgow Herald’ after graduating. In 1958, he became a member of ‘The Economist.’ He worked as a sub-editor, a leader writer, and an associate editor at the company. He also became a political editor for ‘ITN’ very quickly. He was also the principal anchor for the ITV network’s coverage of the General Elections in 1964, 1966, and 1970. In 1965, he left ITN.

Burnet also worked for Associated-weekly Rediffusion’s current affairs show ‘This Week’ as a broadcaster and interviewer. He also worked as an editor for the ‘Daily Express’ for 18 months before resigning. Burnet also contributed to ‘Queen Elizabeth II: 60 Glorious Years’ and ‘The British Connection’ as a writer. He was also a director for the ‘ITV News at Ten’ program.

He also worked for the BBC for a short time, fronting their coverage of the General Election. On August 29, 1991, he made his farewell appearance on ITN in the final edition of ‘News at Ten.’ He died on July 20, 2012, at his Kensington nursing home.  ‘In Person: The Prince and Princess of Wales,’ for example, was one of his many books. In the 1984 New Year Honours, Burnet was knighted. He also received a number of prizes throughout his career, including three BAFTA Richard Dimbleby awards.
