Career

With Fitzroy, Lynch began his senior football career in 1988. He signed his first deal on February 5. Lynch could play full-back or center half-back and was a formidable defender. He earned the 1989 Mark of the Year title for his exceptional aerial ability. In his early years, he was noted for his strong marking and tough tackling. Highlights of his career included his epic battles with key forwards like Tony Lockett, who has cited Lynch as one of his most challenging opponents.

In 2004, following Brisbane’s loss in the AFL Grand Final, Lynch made his retirement announcement. Some considered it to be a disappointing end to his career because he injured his quadriceps early in the game, his only stat for the day was giving away a free kick that resulted in Port Adelaide’s first goal of the game, and he would have missed the first ten games of 2005 after being reported seven times for engaging in a full-fledged fight with Darryl Wakelin of Port Adelaide for which Lynch was fined $15,000.
