Alex Jennings was born in Essex, England on May 10, 1957, to Peggy Patricia Mahoney (mother) and Michael Thomas Jennings (father) (father). Tim Jennings is his younger brother. Alex enrolled in Hornchurch’s Abbs Cross Technical High School. He went on to study English and Theatre at the University of Warwick. In 1978, he received his bachelor’s degree from the University.

Jennings then joined the Old Vic Theatre and pursued his dream of becoming a performer. He then spent the next two years studying at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Smiley’s People was Alex Jennings’ debut series role in 1982. In 1989, the actor made his film debut in the part of Blinded Soldier in Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem. Alex went on to play Lord Mark in the 1997 film The Wings of the Dove. In 2000, he played Julian Edgbaston-Bowles in the television series Too Much Sun.

His other early film and television work includes The Four Feathers, Five Children and It, and Agatha Christie’s Poirot. Jennings starred as Ken Clifford in the 2006 film Babel. Alex then starred as Chance in the 2013 film Trap for Cinderella. In 2015, he was cast as Clive Ord-Smith in the drama television series Foyle’s War.

A year later, Jennings starred as Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor in the television series The Crown. Until 2017, he appeared on the show alongside Ben Miles, Lia Williams, and Matt Smith. His most recent pieces include The Halcyon, A Very English Scandal, and Unforgotten. He played Ted in the drama miniseries Gold Digger in 2019.
