He was also a key member of Iran’s squad during the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification process. Karimi scored five goals at the 2004 Asian Cup. In the 2006 World Cup final in Germany, he performed poorly. He took part in the Asian Cup in 2007. Karimi participated in Iran’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, and on June 10, 2009, he scored in a 1-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates to keep Iran’s prospects of making it to the 2010 World Cup alive.

He made a comeback on March 3, 2010, to face Thailand in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification game.
