He received the grandmaster title from FIDE in April 2018 in recognition of his outstanding efforts. In the same year, he won all three open competitions for Iran in the Asian Nations Cup.

After November 2019, he ceased representing Iran in chess competitions. Alireza started competing for FIDE in December 2019 and finished in June 2021. In April 2021, he defeated Magnus Carlsen, the world’s best chess player, in a match at the Chess24 Banter Blitz Cup.

He did, however, play Magnus again at the Magnus Carlsen Invitational, although he was unable to win this time. Ali acquired French citizenship in July 2021, at which point he began competing as a French representative in several competitions. His current rating (as of August 2022) is 2778, down from a peak rating of 2804 in December 2021.

However, he is currently ranked No. 4 in the world. He has competed against several grandmasters throughout the course of his career, including Ian Nepomniachtchi, Hikaru Nakamura, Richard Rapport, and others.
