Early Years: Where is Amal Clooney from?

Amal Clooney was born on February 3, 1978, in Beirut, Lebanon, under the given name Amal Alamuddin. She is of Lebanese-British nationality and is of mixed race because she is descended from both Druze and Arab Lebanese. During the Lebanese Civil War, when she was two years old, her family fled Lebanon and eventually settled in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. She is a practicing Muslim. Amal turned 43 years old in 2021, and according to her birth date, she is an Aquarius. Her race is therefore white. The American University of Beirut is where her father Ramzi Alamuddin obtained his MBA.

He is a Lebanese Druze from the village of Baakline, which is part of the Alam al-Din dynasty, in the Chouf District. In 1991, he went back to Lebanon. Her mother, Bariaa (née Miknass), is a political journalist and the foreign editor of the pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat. She comes from a family of Sunni Muslims from Tripoli in Northern Lebanon. One sister and two half-brothers from her father’s first marriage make up Clooney’s three siblings. Amal won a scholarship and the Shrigley Award at St. Hugh’s College in Oxford after attending Dr. Challoner’s High School and continuing her education there. What is the Professional Career of Amal Clooney?

Despite being licensed to practice law in both the US and the UK, Amal Clooney begins her career by spending three years as a member of the Criminal Defense and Investigations Group at Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City. In New York in 2002 and in England and Wales in 2010, she was admitted to the bar. She has also worked as a lawyer in many international tribunals in The Hague, such as the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.

In 2004, she also finished her legal clerkship at the International Court of Justice, working for Russian Judge Vladlen S. Vereshchetin. After thereafter, she was headquartered in The Hague and worked for the prosecutor’s office at both the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon. She moved back to Britain in 2010, where she joined Doughty Street Chambers as a barrister. In 2013, she was appointed to a number of UN commissions.

Teaching

During the spring 2015 and 2016 academic semesters, Amal served as a senior fellow and visiting faculty member at the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School. She collaborated with Sarah H. Cleveland as a professor in Cleveland’s human rights course and instructed students in the school’s human rights clinic in a course on human rights litigation. Additionally, she co-taught a fundamental human rights class at Columbia Law School for the spring 2018 semester with Sarah H. Cleveland. She has also given lectures on international criminal law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The Hague Academy of International Law, The New School in New York City, and the SOAS Law School in London.

Notable cases

In the dispute between Merck Sharp and Dohme and the Republic of Ecuador in 2011, Amal provided support to the Permanent Court of Arbitration. In 2004, when he and other journalists were detained in Egypt, she spoke on behalf of Canadian Al Jazeera journalist Mohamed Fahmy. She began working on the acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide in January 2015, and she and Geoffrey Robertson QC represented Armenia on behalf of Doughty Street Chambers. On March 8, 2015, she brought a claim against the Philippine government before the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. On April 7, 2015, it was revealed that she would be a member of the legal team representing Mohamed Nasheed.

In June 2015, Clooney started working on the freshly reopened Hooded Men case, which involved the Irish government accusing the British government of violating human rights. She worked on the matter with the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Charles Flanagan, and in September 2018, the court dismissed the case’s final appeal. In 2016, it was revealed that Clooney would defend journalist Khadija Ismayilova from Azerbaijan before the European Court of Human Rights. She made her first appearance at the UN in September 2016 before the UNODC to address the choice she had made in June 2016 to represent Nadia Murad as a client in legal proceedings against ISIL commanders. In February 2020, Amal began advocating on behalf of the Maldives before the UN International Court of Justice to seek redress for the Rohingya community.

Appointments

• The UK Attorney General’s Office appointed Amal for the period 2014 to 2019 to the C Panel of the Public International Law Panel of Counsel on 25th February 2014.
• She was a signatory of UNICEF UK and Jemima Khan’s open letter that called for “action from UK Government to protect women and children” in May 2014.
• She became a special envoy at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office in April 2019 as well as in the July of the following year she was appointed Deputy Chair of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.
• Later she resigned as Special Envoy over the UK government’s intention to break international law over Brexit in September 2020. She remains Vice-Chair of the High-Level Panel.

Amal Clooney is already married. On April 28, 2014, she announced her engagement to actor George Clooney, whom she had first met in July 2013 through a mutual friend.
