Gorman describes herself as a “weird child” who grew up without much access to television. Her mother encouraged her to read and write in her spare time. Gorman also discusses a childhood speech impediment, auditory processing disorder, and hypersensitivity to sound.

In the same way, she wrote “In This Place: An American Lyric” for the opening. Afterward, Tracy K. Smith was named Poet Laureate of the United States because of what she did in this show.

While at Harvard College, Gorman became the first person in the United States to be named National Youth Poet Laureate in April 2017. She was one of five finalists, and a media group gave her a grant for her work.
