Ali Omar Ader, the chief negotiator in their hostage-taking, was caught in 2015. In an interview with Channel Seven in August 2018, she talked about her harrowing 15 months in Somalia. She claimed that the idea of killing herself had never occurred to her. Every day, she prayed for a better day and the chance to see her family again.

After the kidnapper took them captive, the Canadian journalists were separated into separate rooms. She claimed she had been raped and tormented on a regular basis for months. The kidnappers contacted their relatives and demanded a $1.5 million ransom from each of them. They also attempted to flee several times but were unsuccessful each time.
