She grew up with a goal to establish a name for herself in law, but that changed after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in politics, philosophy, and economics and completing a one-year internship at the ABC Network. Her first ambition was to become a lawyer, but she changed her mind after receiving a one-year fellowship at ABC News following college.

NBC hired her later in 2003 and she began working for the Dateline NBC show, where she was tasked with producing and editing documentary segments. She served as a producer on the NBC show Mortgage Crisis Investigations, which was produced by the network’s investigative team. The show was also one of the most successful, as evidenced by its nomination for an Emmy Award in the category of Business & Financial Reporting in 2008.

The next year, in 2009, Nawaz was awarded an International Reporting Project grant, in addition to a News & Documentary Emmy Award for his work on the NBC News program Inside the Obama White House.
