San Francisco 49ers selected Carter in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He has 154 solo tackles, 32 sacks, and 12 pass deflections in 69 games with the 49ers. Carter, an unrestricted free agent, agreed to a six-year, $30 million contract with the Washington Redskins on March 14, 2006.
