Andy began playing professionally at West Bromwich Albion. He joined Oldham Athletic in 1981. Returning to Scotland, he paid £325,000 to join Hibernian in 1987. On October 10, 1987, he made his Hibs debut, keeping a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory over Dunfermline Athletic. He made his debut in a 6-0 victory over St. Johnstone on the first day of the season after joining Rangers in a £1 million transfer move. He shared the team’s player of the year honors from the Scottish Football Writers and Scottish Professional Footballers Association. The summer of 1993 saw him have knee surgery.

He represented a number of Oldham clubs in the Saddleworth League, including Delph & Dobcross, Moorside, and East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe, Bury, as a wicket-keeper and batsman. In Scottish cricket leagues, he had previously represented Penicuik, Kelso, West Lothian, and Uddingston. He played four times for Scotland, twice in the NatWest Trophy and twice in the annual first-class match against Ireland (1989 and 1991). He eventually played for Freuchie Cricket Club in their centenary week matches against Cricket Scotland President’s XI, Falkland Cricket Club, and Sussex Ladies after concluding his football career. In May 2016, he participated in his final game for a Scotland over-50s team versus Lancashire over-50s.
