Childhood

Anne Keothavong was born in London’s Hackney district on September 16, 1983, to parents who fled their war-torn native country of Laos in the 1970s. Her father, Somsak, encouraged her to play short tennis from a young age. Vathana is her mother’s name, and she has two brothers, James, a tennis umpire, and Mark. Her sister, Lena, is also present.

Education

Keothavong attended Kingsland Secondary School in Hackney. She began playing tennis at the age of seven in Hackney Downs and Highbury Fields. Her preferred court surface was hardcourt.

Career

  • Keothavong made her ITF Junior Circuit debut in February 1996, when she was 12 years old, and her last appearance was in August 2001. At the LTA Junior International Tournament – Bisham Abbey, she won one singles title, defeating compatriot Elena Baltacha in the final. She also reached three semifinals (one at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships, where she was defeated by Dinara Safina, the future world number one who, like Anne, went on to rank higher in seniors than juniors) and ten quarterfinals.
  • At the age of 14, Keothavong made her ITF Women’s Circuit debut in April 1998, when she lost in the first round of qualification for a $10,000 event in Birmingham. She only played two more matches that year, both of which she lost (in $10,000 qualifying tournaments in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and Felixstowe). She had no global ranking at the end of the year.
  • Keothavong had a rough start to 2013, losing in the first round of Australian Open qualification to Grace Min. Despite this, she was named to the Fed Cup team, along with Laura Robson, Heather Watson, and Johanna Konta, to compete against Portugal, Hungary, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • On July 24, 2013, she announced her retirement from professional tennis.
  • In December 2016, Keothavong was named the new captain of the Great Britain Fed Cup team, succeeding Judy Murray. In 2017, she was embroiled in a scandal after the captain of Romania’s Fed Cup team, Ilie Năstase, used vulgar language against her and the British team during a match.
