Later, one of the teachers informed the students and shouted at them to hide under tables, and all of the students, including Austin and his friend Corey, hid under the table as the gun entered the room and began to fire under the table, hitting him in the leg and hand but his friend was killed.
Austin, on the other hand, pretended to be dead after the Gunmen exited the classroom and he and the other surviving students fled to safety. This incident occurred in 1999 at Columbine High School, and Austin was rushed to the hospital, as he stated in an interview.
“I was taken to the hospital for treatment, and that is when my story truly began.”
In fact, following this incident, he was on medication and was taking 7.5mg of Vicodin to cope with the pain; later, this turned into a daily intake of alcohol and prescription painkillers, and he became addicted to opioids, and he stated, “When I took those substances, things felt better.” I wasn’t crying as much, and things didn’t hurt as much.”
Furthermore, he became addicted to marijuana, then ecstasy and cocaine, and even heroin at the height of his addiction, taking around 400mg of the highly addictive and potentially lethal painkiller Oxycontin every day – more than 40 times the dose doctors will initially prescribe patients.
