Austin Lee Scarlett was born in Cottage Grove, Oregon, in 1983 to Debra Little and Christopher Scarlett. He studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and specialised in couture and evening wear. He also took fine arts training at the Art Students League of New York.

Following graduation, he worked as an apprentice fashion archivist at the Museum at FIT and as a theatrical costume design assistant and pattern maker, honing his dressmaking skills.

On the first season of Project Runway (2004–2005), he first achieved international notoriety for his designs by winning the first task with his famous corn husk outfit.

Following his success, he created couture wedding collections under his own name for the fall 2005 and spring 2006 seasons.

Austin joined Amsale, a New York-based bridal-design firm, as Creative Director of its luxury gown collection, Kenneth Pool, in 2006, and stayed there until 2009.

In his critically acclaimed television program, On the Road with Austin, Austin conceived, hosted, and designed, and Santino in 2010. Later, on Project Runway All-Stars, he captured the hearts and minds of millions with his unique style.

Also he lectured at Yale, the New York Public Library, Parsons School of Design, and the University of Texas as a fashion historian and specialist.

Not only that, but he also wrote the book Forever Scarlett, Gone with the Wind’s Immortal Style.
