His father, Leonard Luhrmann, owned a gas station and a theater, while his mother, Barbara Carmel (née Brennan), taught ballroom dancing and had a dress boutique. Herons Creek, a small rural community in northern New South Wales, is where he was raised. He attended St. Joseph’s Hastings Regional School in Port Macquarie from 1975 to 1978.
