Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu is a forensic pathologist and neuropathologist who is Nigerian-American. While working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pittsburgh, he was the first to identify and publish results of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players. He then became the chief medical examiner for San Joaquin County and is now a professor in the Department of Medical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

Bennet Omalu’s Childhood and Education

Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu, a well-known Nigerian-American physician, forensic pathologist, and neuropathologist, was born in Brokaw, Idemili South, Nigeria, in September 1968. He was the first to identify and publish results of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in American football players while working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pittsburgh. Omalu was born in Nnokwa, Idemili South, Anambra State, Nigeria, during the Nigerian Civil War, which was extremely perilous for her family and the entire country.

He is one of seven siblings. In Enugu-Ukwu, Omalu’s mother worked as a seamstress, and his father worked as a civil mining engineer and community leader. In 1994, Bennet Omalu moved to Seattle, Washington to pursue an epidemiology fellowship at the University of Washington.
